Did you know that the fields of energy moving through your home right now are doing far more than powering your lights and connecting your phone calls?
The electromagnetic fields around us are not simply background noise. They are something your body is listening to, and the research is starting to catch up with what that may mean.
What is an EMF, really?
Electromagnetic fields are invisible areas of energy created wherever electricity flows. They ripple outward from power lines, from the wiring inside your walls, from the phone in your pocket, and from the Wi-Fi router humming quietly in the corner. For most of my life, I did not think much about them. Although I often avoided putting my phone in my pocket, I sat with my laptop balanced on my lap without a second thought.
Then I started paying attention.
The electromagnetic spectrum runs from the very slow, low-frequency fields produced by household wiring all the way up to X-rays and gamma rays at the other end.
That far end—the ionising end—is the one we have long known to be dangerous. It carries enough energy to physically break apart DNA. Ionising radiation is high when we are flying in aeroplanes. The fields we live with daily—from power lines, phones and Wi-Fi—sit at the low-frequency, non-ionising end. They cannot break DNA directly.
And yet, the research is finding they are not doing nothing.
What the research is telling us
There are three areas where the science is showing consistent findings. The first is oxidative stress. Across 345 studies conducted since 1990, 91% found that exposure to low-frequency and radio-frequency EMFs produced significant oxidative effects in biological tissue. Think of oxidative stress like rust forming inside your cells: unstable molecules called free radicals that damage the structures they encounter, including DNA. Not directly, but indirectly, through a cascade of cellular disruption that builds over time.
The second is a consistently observed association between exposure to power-line-frequency magnetic fields and childhood leukaemia. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified these fields as Group 2B—possibly carcinogenic—based on this epidemiological evidence. The causal mechanism has not been proven, but the association keeps showing up across multiple studies, countries and settings.
The third area is melatonin. The pineal gland, which produces the hormone that governs your sleep and circadian rhythm, appears to produce less melatonin when you are chronically exposed to these fields. Workers with high occupational EMF exposure consistently show lower melatonin levels and higher markers of oxidative damage. And when your sleep is disrupted—when your body cannot repair itself overnight the way it is designed to—the downstream effects touch everything: immunity, cognition and cardiovascular health.
The honest picture
The official position from bodies like the WHO is that exposures below international safety limits do not produce any known adverse health effect. That is the current scientific consensus and it deserves to be stated clearly. And yet the 2026 report from Sweden’s Radiation Safety Authority—one of the most rigorous ongoing reviews of this research—confirmed that oxidative-stress findings continue to accumulate, that the childhood-leukaemia association remains unresolved, and that no new causal relationships have been established. The science is not settled. It is accumulating.
Children are considered particularly vulnerable. Their skulls are thinner, their nervous systems are still developing, and they have a lifetime of exposure ahead of them. Somewhere along the way, I started treating my exposure to EMFs the way I eventually started treating the water I drank: with more curiosity, more care, and a willingness to make small adjustments before the science fully catches up.
Small adjustments to consider
- Keep your phone away from your body when you are not using it.
- Do not sleep with it beside your head.
- Be especially thoughtful with children.
- Consider a Building Biologist assessment of your home if you are concerned about your exposure.
We use different equipment in and around the clinic to reduce EMF exposure. If you are concerned about your exposure and how it is affecting you, we have methods to test EMF stress in the clinic.
The fields around you are not neutral. Your body is listening.
With love and health,
